The secondary mail server is designed to provide back up for the primary mail server when it proves inaccessible (due to server or link outages for example) in order to reduce the incidence of loss of emails which may result in lost sales and revenue and objectionable breaks in communication reflecting negatively on the business image of customers. Where the primary mail server is not reachable then the mail will be attempted to be delivered to the mail server with the second lowest MX level (the MX record for the secondary mail server must be preconfigured in the DNS for the appropriate domain). On the secondary mail server customer will be able to store up to 1GB of his emails for a period up to two weeks.
